Woman sentenced to probation for fatal hit-and-run in North Park

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman accused of causing a fatal crash in North Park last November was sentenced Monday to two years of probation.

Donna Jacobs, now 77, pleaded not guilty to the charges last year but changed her mind a few months ago and pleaded guilty.

The crash killed 42-year-old Stephen Debow. His friends were in the courtroom Monday for the verdict, telling ABC 10News the sentence was insufficient.

Jacobs is accused of hitting Debow last November, riding with him on the hood of her car for 65 feet, then leaving the scene and driving home. Debow died in hospital six days later. She was caught and arrested days after the crash.

The city of San Diego recorded the incident on its Vision Zero website, with data provided by the San Diego Police Department. According to the county’s website, Vision Zero is “a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries within a designated time frame.”

The terms of her sentence include 365 days of house arrest and, if eligible, the use of an electronic monitor. She is also prohibited from driving a motor vehicle.

Jacobs apologized in court Monday, but only after claiming she did not realize she had hit the man, despite pleading guilty.

Debow’s friends accused Jacobs of making excuses and showing no remorse for her actions. They wanted her to spend the rest of her life in prison.

Jacobs could face up to two years in prison if she violates the terms of her probation.
