Why Richard Hughes is ‘furious’ with Martin Zubimendi after Liverpool transfer fiasco

Martin Zubimendi’s transfer to Liverpool is not possible as the midfielder has already made the decision to remain at Real Sociedad.

The midfielder has thrown a wrench into the Reds’ transfer plans as he has decided to stay in La Liga for at least another year.

The Reds appeared to be on the verge of taking control of Zubimendi but the Merseyside club are now back to square one.

With three weeks to go until the end of the transfer window, Liverpool have still not made a single signing and, as you might imagine, Richard Hughes has not had the best start to his career as the club’s sporting director.

Furthermore, Hughes has yet to sign any contract with Liverpool and according to The Mail he is not happy with the way the Zubimendi deal has gone.

Why Richard Hughes is mad at Martin Zubimendi

According to The Mail, Richard Hughes is very angry with Martin Zubimendi.

The sporting director is said to have been unhappy with the midfielder as he felt Zubimendi had given his word that he would join Liverpool.

Unfortunately for the Reds, Zubimendi has not kept his promise and is set to remain in Spain for another year.

Liverpool still need a midfielder

Liverpool may not sign Zubimendi this summer but they still need a midfielder.

Indeed, the Reds are still lacking a sixth-string playmaker, and while players like Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister can play in that position, the Reds need a specialist in that position if they are to challenge for the league title.

Zubimendi would be ideal in the role but unfortunately Liverpool were forced to abandon their pursuit of the midfielder, much to Hughes’ dismay.

Hughes’ first transfer window as Liverpool’s sporting director hasn’t gone to plan, but he still has plenty of time to make a few game-changing signings.
